“Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who have sex with men… will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” — 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Introduction
Today, we are going to address a topic that can be difficult to discuss: homosexuality and God’s view of it. It’s important to approach this with both truth and love because God’s Word is clear on the matter, yet His mercy is available to all.
The question many ask is, “Does God truly abhor homosexuality?” The answer is found in the Bible, and it’s not based on human opinions or modern trends but on God’s eternal truth.
God’s Design for Sexuality
From the very beginning, God established His design for relationships. In Genesis, we read:
“So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” — Genesis 1:27
And later:
“For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” — Genesis 2:24
God’s design for marriage and sexual intimacy is clear: one man and one woman in a covenant relationship. This design reflects His purpose for humanity—to love, to create life, and to reflect His image.
Anything outside of this design, including homosexuality, falls short of God’s intention. It is not about singling out one sin; rather, it’s about recognizing that God’s way leads to life and fulfillment, while our ways lead to brokenness.
What Does God Say About Homosexuality?
The Bible specifically addresses homosexuality in several passages, including:
• Leviticus 18:22: “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.”
• Romans 1:26-27: “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.”
These verses are not about hatred but about truth. God calls homosexuality a sin because it goes against His holy nature and His perfect design. It is an act of rebellion against Him, just like any other sin that seeks to replace His will with our desires.
Why Does God Abhor Sin?
God hates sin because it separates us from Him. He created us to be in a relationship with Him, but sin distorts and destroys that relationship.
Sin is not just about breaking rules; it’s about breaking God’s heart. When we choose sin—whether it’s pride, greed, lust, or homosexuality—we are choosing our way over God’s. The result is always the same: spiritual death.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23
God abhors sin because it harms us, and He loves us too much to leave us in it.
The Call to Repentance
The good news is that God does not leave us in our sin. He offers a way out through repentance. Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God.
In 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Paul lists several sins, including homosexuality, and says that those who practice them will not inherit the kingdom of God. But he doesn’t stop there. He says:
“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
Repentance is possible because of Jesus. Through His death and resurrection, He made a way for all sinners to be forgiven and transformed. No sin is too great for His grace.
What Does Repentance Look Like?
Repentance is not just feeling sorry for your sin; it’s a complete change of heart and direction. Here’s what it involves:
1. Acknowledging Sin: Admit that homosexuality, like all sin, goes against God’s will.
2. Seeking Forgiveness: Confess your sin to God and ask for His mercy.
3. Turning Away from Sin: This means committing to live according to God’s design, even when it’s difficult.
4. Trusting Jesus for Strength: You cannot do this on your own. Depend on Jesus and the Holy Spirit to help you live a new life.
Can Someone Struggling with Homosexuality Be Saved?
Yes! Salvation is available to everyone who repents and believes in Jesus Christ. Your past does not define you; your identity in Christ does.
God does not promise that the struggle will disappear overnight, but He does promise to walk with you, to strengthen you, and to give you the power to overcome sin.
Conclusion
God’s Word is clear: homosexuality, like all sin, is not His will for us. But His love and grace are also clear—He desires for all to come to repentance and be saved.
If you are struggling with homosexuality or any other sin, know this: God loves you too much to leave you in it. He is calling you to turn to Him, to trust Him, and to walk in His ways.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9
Will you answer His call today?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your truth and Your grace. Help us to see sin for what it is and to turn from it. For those struggling with homosexuality or any sin, give them the courage to seek You and the strength to follow You. May we all live lives that honor Your holy name. Amen.
