STOP CURSING YOURSELF!

Good morning, church! Today, we’re going to talk about something that’s really important—the words you speak. And no, we’re not just talking about swearing or using bad language (though, that’s important too). We’re talking about the words you speak over your own life, the things you say about yourself, and how those words shape your destiny.
Now, I know, sometimes life gets hard and we feel like giving up. You might catch yourself saying things like: “I can’t do this.” “I’ll never be good enough.” “This will never work out.” You know, the “I’m-a-failure-before-I-even-start” kind of talk. But guess what? You’re cursing yourself with your own words! And today, we’re going to talk about why you need to STOP doing that.
So, put your seatbelts on and get ready, because we’re going to break down how you have the power to change your life—not by wishing on a star—but by changing the words you speak!
1. Your Words Have Power: Speak Life, Not Death
First things first, let’s talk about what the Bible says about words. In Proverbs 18:21, it says,
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
You hear that? Your tongue has the power of life and death. That’s some serious stuff! It’s like having a magic wand—except the wand is your mouth, and you can either cast blessings or curses with it. You’re either building your future with your words, or you’re burning it down.
When you say things like, “I’m never going to get ahead,” you’re handing the devil the keys to your future and saying, “Here, take the wheel, I’m done.” But when you say, “I am more than a conqueror through Christ,” you’re opening the door for blessings, opportunities, and success to come flooding in.
Think of it like this: What you say is like planting seeds. Every word you speak is a seed that will either grow into something good, or something bad. So, if you’re constantly planting seeds like, “I can’t do this,” guess what kind of harvest you’ll get? A big ol’ crop of failure, frustration, and defeat! But when you plant seeds like, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” you’re going to see a harvest of growth, victory, and breakthrough.
2. Stop Saying “I Can’t” and Start Saying “I Can”
Have you ever noticed how often we say “I can’t”? And let’s be honest—we love saying it. It’s like we think it’s some kind of safety net. “Oh, I’ll just say I can’t and then I don’t have to try hard.” Or, “If I say I can’t, no one will expect me to actually do it.” But here’s the thing—when you keep saying “I can’t,” you are literally programming your brain for failure. It’s like you’re telling your mind, “I’m not good enough,” or “I’m not capable,” and your mind starts to believe it!
But what if you started saying, “I can do this!”? What if you started saying, “God is on my side, so I can overcome this challenge”? Here’s the crazy thing: God says you can. Philippians 4:13 says,
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Did you catch that? It doesn’t say, “I can do some things, but not the big stuff.” It says ALL things. That means you can face your fears, conquer your doubts, and succeed at things you never thought were possible!
If God is with you, then why are you limiting yourself with “I can’t”? God never told you to play small. He told you to move mountains. Stop cursing yourself with “I can’t” and start speaking “I can,” because in Christ, you already can.
3. Negative Words Delay Your Blessings
Now, let’s talk about something important: delayed blessings. You know how sometimes you feel like you’re stuck in a waiting room, just twiddling your thumbs, like, “Lord, when is my breakthrough coming?” Well, here’s a little secret: Sometimes the delay is not because God is slow—it’s because we’re speaking things into existence that hold us back.
When you constantly say, “I’m always broke,” or “I’ll never find a good job,” you’re putting up walls around your own blessings. You’re saying, “God, I’m good with where I am,” and God’s like, “No! I have so much more for you, but you keep telling yourself you’re stuck.”
In James 4:2, it says, “You do not have because you do not ask.” But there’s another side to that—if you’re not asking God for the right things, or if you’re not believing that He can give you more, then you’re cutting off your own blessing supply! If you don’t believe you deserve good things, or that you’re capable of achieving greatness, then God can’t release those blessings into your life. Your words are blocking the flow.
So, what can you do? Start declaring what God has already promised you! Start saying, “I am blessed and highly favored. God has plans to prosper me, not to harm me!” Speak those words over your life, and watch how things start shifting. Your words create the path that your feet will walk on.
4. Your Mind and Heart Follow Your Words
Another powerful thing about words is how they shape your heart and mind. When you say “I can’t” over and over, your brain starts to believe it, and your heart starts to doubt God’s promises. It’s like you’re writing a script for your own life, and if all you’re writing is negative stuff, then your mind will play that script on repeat. And guess what? That becomes your reality.
But when you speak truth—like, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made,” or “I have the mind of Christ”—you begin to program your mind for success, peace, and joy. Your thoughts start lining up with God’s Word, and you’ll find yourself living in the victory He has for you!
5. Change Your Words, Change Your Life
Here’s the bottom line, church: Stop cursing yourself with negative, limiting words. Stop speaking defeat over your life. Speak God’s truth over your situation and watch things change. Words are like the GPS of your life—if you keep setting the wrong destination, that’s where you’re going to end up. But if you set your destination to God's promises, your life will head straight into His plans for you.
So, let’s start today. From now on, speak life. Speak blessing. Speak victory. Speak success. Speak joy. Speak faith. Because you can, through Christ!
Let’s pray.
Father, thank You for the power of Your Word and the power of the words we speak. Help us to speak life over our lives, over our families, and over our future. Teach us to speak with faith, not fear, and to declare Your promises over every situation. We know that our words are powerful, and with Your guidance, we will speak life, not death. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Church, let’s stop cursing ourselves, and start declaring the life and blessings God has for us.
