Are you master of your domain? I want to talk today about something that may make some of you uncomfortable, but I promise you it’s important and relevant. Today, we’re talking about masturbation. Now, I know this isn’t the most popular topic, but hear me out—because I believe understanding God's heart on this matter can free you and help you live the life He truly wants for you.
Let me start by saying that God loves you, and He has a good, fulfilling plan for your life. But just like any loving parent, He has rules to help guide you and protect you. Sometimes, those rules don’t line up with what culture says is okay, but God’s way is always the best way.
You may have heard someone say, "Masturbation isn't really a big deal, is it?" It’s a small thing, right? “It's just something I do to relax,” or “I’m not hurting anyone.” But here’s the truth: It is a big deal to God, and there’s a reason for it. Let's dive in.
The Bible and Sexual Purity
First, let’s talk about why masturbation is a sin. The Bible has a lot to say about sexual purity and how we should honor our bodies. One of the most clear teachings comes from 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, which says:
"It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God."
Notice that Paul says we are to control our bodies, not let our bodies control us. Masturbation often involves indulging in passionate lust, which means it isn't just a physical act—it taps into deeper desires that God doesn't want us to give in to.
When you’re indulging in this act, it’s not about honor, love, or respect. It's a selfish act, a pursuit of self-gratification rather than love and intimacy between a husband and wife, as God designed.
Lust in the Heart
Now, let’s go a little deeper. In Matthew 5:28, Jesus says:
"But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
Masturbation is often tied to fantasy. Whether it’s imagining a person, a scene, or a situation, it usually involves lustful thinking. And lust is not just a thought problem—it’s a heart problem. Jesus teaches us that if we entertain lustful thoughts, it’s like we’ve already committed the act in our hearts.
You see, it’s not just the physical act of something that makes it a sin—it’s the heart behind it. Masturbation often involves fantasizing about people or things in a way that God never intended. And that’s where the issue lies. It's not just a harmless release of energy. It’s feeding something in your heart that should not be there: lust, selfishness, and discontentment with God's plan for your sexuality.
God Wants to Protect You
I know it may seem like masturbation is harmless, but God is concerned about your heart, your mind, and your soul. He knows that these things can pollute your heart and lead to further sin.
God wants to protect you from addiction, depression, and guilt that often come with sexual sin. You may think masturbation is a “quick fix” for your urges, but in reality, it’s creating unhealthy patterns in your life. When you feed that desire, it grows, and it pulls you further away from God's perfect plan for your life. It’s like eating junk food when you know you should be eating healthy—it may feel good in the moment, but it’s not doing your body any favors.
Why God Hates Sexual Immorality
Now, you might be wondering, “Why is it such a big deal? Why does God hate sexual immorality so much?” Here's why: Sexual sin is more than a physical act—it attacks the very foundation of what God designed for our lives. God created sex to be a beautiful, sacred thing between a husband and wife, to build intimacy and reflect the love between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:31-32).
When we engage in sexual immorality, whether through masturbation, pornography, adultery, or premarital sex, we’re distorting God’s original plan. We’re taking something holy and making it about us rather than about God’s glory and love.
The Bible teaches that sexual immorality leads to brokenness—broken relationships, broken hearts, and even physical and mental health consequences. When we reject God’s standard, we open ourselves up to consequences that hurt us.
Breaking Free from the Cycle
The great news is that Jesus came to set us free from the power of sin. If you’re struggling with masturbation or any other sin, God offers forgiveness and healing. 1 John 1:9 tells us:
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
You can break free from the grip of sexual sin. It won’t be easy, but with God’s help, you can overcome it. The first step is confessing it to God, acknowledging that it’s wrong, and asking for His help. The second step is to guard your heart and mind. Be intentional about what you allow into your thoughts. The third step is to fill your life with the things of God—spend time in His Word, in prayer, and surround yourself with people who will encourage you to live according to His ways.
Conclusion: Living in God’s Design
God’s design for sexuality is good. It’s beautiful. But we must recognize that when we go outside of His plan, we open ourselves up to destruction. Masturbation is a sin because it’s rooted in lust, selfishness, and disobedience to God’s plan for purity.
But here’s the most important thing: God’s grace is greater than any sin. If you’ve struggled with this, or any other form of sexual immorality, know that God loves you. He wants to restore you. His mercy is new every morning, and He is faithful to forgive.
As Christians, let’s commit to living in God’s design for our sexuality, honoring Him with our bodies and our hearts, and walking in purity and freedom.
Let’s pray.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the truth of Your Word and the freedom that we have in You. We confess that we have fallen short in many ways, especially in areas of sexuality. Lord, we ask for Your forgiveness and Your help in overcoming the temptations that pull us away from You. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, guide us in Your truth, and help us honor You in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Go out today, and live with purity and freedom, knowing that God has a better plan for your life than anything the world can offer!
