Understanding 1x1x1: The Mystery of the Trinity

Good morning, everyone! Today, I want to talk to you about something that has puzzled believers for centuries—the Holy Trinity. Now, before you start zoning out, let me promise you this: I won't be pulling out a chalkboard and teaching math class. Is not hard to process.. even a shampoo, conditioner, and body wash come in one bottle!

But I do want to use a simple equation to explain it. You ready? 1 x 1 x 1 = 1. Not 3. One. That's the Trinity.

One God, Three Persons

If you’re scratching your head, trust me, you’re not alone. The Trinity is one of those mysteries that stretches our understanding. But God isn’t asking us to figure it all out; He’s asking us to trust Him.

Let’s break it down:

  • God the Father

  • God the Son (Jesus)

  • God the Holy Spirit

Three distinct persons, but still one God. Not three gods, not one God wearing three different hats. One God in three persons.

Jesus Explains the Trinity

In John 10:30, Jesus says, "I and the Father are one." He didn’t say, "Me and Dad are tight" or "We think alike." No, He said, "We are ONE." And if that wasn’t clear enough, in John 14:9, Jesus tells Philip, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father."

Jesus wasn’t claiming to be a really good reflection of God. He was saying, "Hey, if you’re looking at me, you’re looking at God."

Before Abraham Was, I AM

Now, let’s rewind to John 8:58. Jesus is talking to the Pharisees, and He drops this truth bomb: "Before Abraham was born, I am." Hold up. That’s not just fancy language. When Jesus says "I AM," He’s reaching all the way back to Exodus 3:14, where God tells Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." Jesus is saying, "That was Me talking to Moses."

It blew their minds—and it should blow ours too! Jesus wasn’t just present at creation; He IS the Creator (John 1:1-3).

The God-Man Mystery

One of the biggest questions people often ask—especially our Muslim friends—is this: "How can God be a man and still be God? Isn’t that limiting Him?" Here’s the thing. God becoming man in Jesus wasn’t about limitation; it was about love. Philippians 2:6-7 tells us that Jesus,

"being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant."

Jesus is fully God and fully man. Not half and half. 100% God, 100% man. The Incarnation wasn’t God losing something; it was God adding humanity to His divinity so He could rescue us.

The Trinity doesn’t mean three gods. It means one God in three persons, working together in perfect unity. The Father, Son, and Spirit are not separate beings, but one divine essence. God is not bound by the same rules that apply to His creation.

The Holy Spirit - The Helper

So, where does the Holy Spirit fit in? Jesus breaks it down in John 14:16-17:

"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth."

The Holy Spirit isn’t some cosmic sidekick. He’s God living in us, guiding, comforting, and reminding us of Jesus' words.1 x 1 x 1 = 1. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are fully God, working together, in unity, as One.

Why Does This Matter?

Understanding the Trinity isn’t just theological trivia. It’s personal. It means:

  • You are loved by the Father.

  • You are saved by the Son.

  • You are empowered by the Holy Spirit.

God isn’t distant. He’s closer than you think. He’s Father, Son, and Spirit—and He’s all in on loving you.

Closing Prayer

Father, we thank You for revealing Yourself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Even though we can’t fully grasp the mystery of the Trinity, we are grateful that You are one God who knows us, loves us, and saves us. Jesus, thank You for showing us the Father. Holy Spirit, thank You for living in us and guiding us. Help us to walk in Your truth and to trust You more each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
